The actual moisture content and suitability for burning depend on storage conditions and the drying process. The hardwood species available have a stated reference calorific value of approximately 5.08 kWh/kg (±2%) under anhydrous conditions. This figure refers to the energy content of the wood in a water-free state and should not be confused with the usable heat output of a heating appliance. The quantities shown are stated in cubic metres (m³) or stacked cubic metres, according to the applicable firewood measurement conventions. Understanding the Delivered Volume The firewood is delivered as 2 metre-long logs. 1 m³ of stacked volume represents an apparent stacked volume of 1 m × 1 m × 1 m. Cutting the 2 metre logs into shorter pieces changes the way the wood can be stacked and therefore the resulting apparent stacked volume. The volume after cutting can therefore differ from the original stacked volume. For this reason, the delivered volume and the volume after cutting should not be treated as identical measurements.
